This was an easy way to install a 2.5" drive in a 3.5" bay without worrying about airflow issues (the small drive doesn't offer enough resistance and fears it will blow the Airflow affected by hotter 3.5" discs). It still lets in too much air compared to a 3.5" drive in the same bay, but it's not as bad as leaving the bay with just a bare 2.5" drive. He lost a star out of fear. I have a metal spring that supposedly holds the disc in place. I put a disc in one to test suitability and immediately took it out. Literally a minute later, the label on the disc was dented in the exact places where the spring rests against the top of the drive. Doesn't bother to spread the load - only presses on two points. Load distribution device made of plastic or metal, I think helped us a lot here. Luckily I'm going to use them "flat" so I don't need that spring to hold my drives in place (the plastic lever that holds them against the interface connector doesn't need that spring or the rod that rotates the spring on), so I removed the damaging spring. They now hold my drives in place by pressing them against the internal connector (they are held horizontally by gravity - I would use something else that doesn't put additional point loads on the top of the drive to hold them when I use it would put them on the side) and I have an easy way to deal with drives used in an existing hot-swap backplane that has numerous 3.5" drives.
