In place of the 1600th, I choose to take it. As was to be predicted, I updated the BIOS (mother AsRock B450MPro4) to version 3.30 before installing the replacement. After installation, I booted the machine and checked the temperature using the Core Temp software; to my horror, I saw that it averaged 45–55 degrees Fahrenheit during idle with occasional, unexplained spikes. I subjected Aida to a stress test, and the temperature gradually increased to 95 over the course of a few minutes. So, I disabled it. I unplugged the computer and returned it. It's great that there were no issues with the refund; it means the sellers understand that this is final and not a processing error. In general, I took 2600 and had it set to idle at 30-33 degrees with a maximum load of 77-80 degrees. Oops, I forgot to cross! The conventional wisdom holds that a 2600 is preferable to a 3600, or any of its 6-thread variants such as the 3500 or 3500X. They get too hot to handle, and the performance boost offered by the 3500 over the 2600 is minimal at best and nullified in multithreaded programs. Perhaps I got married, or perhaps there was a disagreement with the motherboard (I read about this on the boards), but the sediment persisted.
