This device does not measure the distance to a surface. It measures revolutions per minute, m/min, but not meters or feet, like distance traveled. Being so inclined allows you to mark the moving surface and measure the interval of the mark in seconds. Mount the wheel and measure the surface speed, then do the math. But the instrument doesn't count because the wheel is attached to the treadmill. It's cheap and it works. But it doesn't do what I bought it for. In fact, it can do what it says on the tin, but the distance traveled and surface speed instructions are literally identical. That's all.
