Review on πŸ“š Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600: Efficient Overhead Book and Document Scanner for Streamlined Scanning by Doug Layman

GREAT IDEA, BAD IMPLEMENTATION

I like this concept. It scans pretty much everything that sheet-fed scanners can't. It's not as big as it looks, about the size of a banker's desk lamp, and takes up very little desk space. You can connect multiple ScanSnap scanners - sheetfed and document scanners - and easily switch from one to another; the software automatically recognizes which device is being used and uses the appropriate driver: However, the implementation was very disappointing. o Colors and grayscale look acceptable when first scanned, but for some reason get washed out during the "enhancement" phase. Colors lose their luminosity and color fidelity. Shades of gray become ugly and lighter shades of gray even disappear, making pie charts and bar charts, for example, unreadable. There is no setting change that solves the problem; the application makes "improvements" whether it is required or not. The process is very manual and slow. The software needs to do two things: 1) determine margins and centerline, and 2) remove fingerprints. The software doesn't perform any of the functions properly, so a lot of manual editing is required. The software uses 6-point areas to identify pages and fingerprints; Therefore, manual editing involves moving one, and often multiple, edit points for each fingerprint and page that is not automatically recognized correctly. For long documents, this can mean dragging hundreds of edit points into the right places. It is a tedious, time-consuming and tedious work. With the right software, accurate color and grayscale are easily achievable, and document processing can be many times faster, making it a productive and enjoyable tool.
