The plastic is very flexible and the tips do not run together. The locking mechanism doesn't snap tightly at all. The fully locked position still allows for easy translation shifting. Changing gear ratios is too time consuming and clumsy/inconvenient/inelegant. Only a limited number of holes means there is only a limited number of gear ratios. You will compromise. I don't like this tool. I see a lot of pretty good tools for $25 or so,
