This is a chunky kit that tries to do a lot, and probably tries to do too much. I have other, smaller sets that come with just charcoal, or just pastels, or just watercolor pencils, or just regular pencils, and they seem to be more useful than a giant two-tiered set trying to accommodate them all. My can was smashed in transit so the can can't close properly, although pliers helped a lot to straighten it. But even if it wasn't broken, the design wouldn't be good because you have to lift the entire top row of pins to get to the bottom set, which is difficult without dropping a few pins on the floor. ground (perhaps their tips break off). All pencils, except charcoal and pastel (crayon), are pre-sharpened. The color choice is decent; There are 24 regular crayons and 12 more supposedly "metal" but they seem fuzzy to me. I don't see anything particularly metallic about the color they produce. I plan to change the way these pencils are stored so that the "metal" pencils stay on top with regular crayons as they all work pretty much the same. Also included are graphite, pastel, watercolor and charcoal pencils. Watercolor pencils smudge well when water is applied to paper (unlike regular colored pencils), so it's a fun way to experiment with color. Graphite pencils include a good range of thin to thick and light to coarse graphite, ideal for students experimenting with pencil drawing. Charcoal and pastel are more difficult to work with, but they give the young artist an idea of what the material is like. I think a young or inexperienced artist will therefore not notice the difference in quality between this set and more expensive sets from well-known brands, and it could be a good gift set or a good all-purpose set for those looking to experiment with different art styles. Once the student knows what they like, you can move on to more expensive and smaller kits that specialize in their medium of choice.
