Does its job and improves with mods.

You can see in the pictures that the tray has a thumb hole, so it's partly designed for a handheld easel. Unfortunately I need two hands to draw and I usually want a third. So I attached a tripod mount, but it's not exactly designed for that. The bottom wood of the pallet is too shallow for the depth of the mounting screws, so I had to reinforce it with glued wood from the inside before attaching the panel. The surface of the pan itself is very grainy in places, causing my knife to clatter when brushing and the bristles to kink when pureeing. From time to time I clean it thoroughly, sand lightly (not in wood) and apply 1 or 2 coats of tung oil. I hope this will even out the texture over time. The panel mount solution, which doubles as a wet carry box, isn't adjustable like most pochade boxes, although a bit of ingenuity can get around this. You should also be careful not to cover the cardboard with the paint facing forward as there is a risk of touching the paint left on the palette. The shoulder strap clips provide a convenient place to hang your liquor can. I moved a small strap from the back of the box to the front so it can hold a cleaning cloth, although I can no longer use it to carry the box. There is no elegant solution to dirty brushes. I put them in the tray opposite the clean brushes for shipping and am considering drilling different sized holes in the bottom of the front of the palette to stay somewhat vertical while I paint. I bought my box a few months ago before they increased the price by 50%. For $65 I would give 4 stars but for $100 you might want to shop.

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
