We seasoned with canola oil in the oven and it came out great. We use it for indoor smokers and pu pu plates. It's fun and works well. When half filled with Sterno-Gel, it's super hot and will cook steak slices in a minute or two. The steak also has a great fried flavor. As mentioned in many other reviews, it's small. If you want to cook on a large surface, this is not the case. Designed for individual cooking / heating. You can also buy multiple units.
