After some research I've come to the conclusion that the problem could be with the fan. Amazon exchanged the original without any problems and immediately ordered a fan. So far, so good. If they fail, they will get stuck at high speed and you will not be able to disable or disable them. They seem to be sensitive to the amount of current drawn by the fan. So if you run through a couple and it's still not good, go ahead and put in a fan.
