Like many others I was looking for shorts similar to Birddogs but at a lower price. These Meripex shorts are pretty close. As for the color combinations, they obviously just copied the Birddogs. The difference lies in the fabric, the construction and the cut. As previously mentioned, Meripex shorts are made from a much thinner material compared to Birddogs. It's still stretchy and looks decent, but it's definitely thinner and not as smooth. The way the lining is sewn into the shorts is different and adds volume. It's like they took the shell of the shorts and just sewed in another pair of compression shorts - if that makes sense. It's like shorts sewn into other shorts. In terms of fit, the leg openings are wider than the Birddog. More specifically, I think the Meripex fit is somewhat similar to the Khaki & Oxford Birddogs which tend to have a wider leg opening and are less fitted. It's not bad, just something to keep in mind. If you're looking for a fitted birddog look, Meripex may not be the right fit. As for the pockets, I think they are of the same type as the Birddog. Two normal side pockets, a phone pocket and a small back pocket for a wallet. I think someone mentioned that you can't put a wallet in your back pocket - that's not my experience. I have a full sized foldable wallet filled with cards and the back pocket is just great. Overall I think these shorts are definitely worth the money. They are great for both hiking and the gym. If you are looking for an exact copy of Birddogs, they will not suit you. If you are looking for something similar and don't mind small differences, then I think you will be happy. For reference - I have a Twilight 8 inch. I am 6ft 220lbs and size XL fits me and is comfortable.
