There really is a difference between a baby mattress without a topper and a mattress with filling - plush
My newborn only slept with a sheet and a mattress, well sort of. She had a cradle, but when I felt it was time to change it, she hadn't had a 'duvet' for several weeks, and I didn't think it was right. So I bought two of the same brand but not 100% cotton to see which I like better. Although they are almost the same, they smelled and felt different. My daughter and I have allergies and thought 100% cotton would be better for my daughter.
