I have to say I screwed it in without removing the top mattress. Our mattress is # designed for sleeping and requires complete disassembly to remove. I used a large metal trowel to give myself room to screw in and it was tough. If they screwed in from the top it would probably be easier, but when the mattress is as thick as ours it's still difficult to screw in. They work as they should. ** The cute little metal box was crushed which was one of the reasons I bought it. I had to bend it a little to make it easier to open and close. I am disappointed that the box is ruined for future use! There were too many problems to return it! ***The only problem is that nails that are put into the cover sheet can get caught on it. Carry with care.
