I didn't have any success with this product at first because I thought my kitchen knives were semi-sharp and could start with a medium grit stone. I wasn't successful, so I started with the smallest stone and gradually worked my way up. Boy can you tell the difference? When I reached the medium grit stone, the knife was very sharp. Then at the end. HOLY COW. I've never been intimidated by sharp knives until now. Because that knife was SHARP. If I ended it with a block, it would literally be a razor. Love this product - great invention - don't waste your money on all those other sharpening systems like I have. This will be your LAST purchase! Oh forgot to mention this will work with your everyday knives too. My dad found a tanning knife in the parking lot, and it was dumber than a butter knife. I was pleased to try my new knife sharpener for the money. And of course I gave the razor-sharp Gerber back to my dad :-) So cool. I'm still hooked because I'm OUT at knife sharpening and have bought every sharpening system on the market. Yes, also expensive ones. Sooo happy with it :-) Anyway, happy shaving :-)
