One of my hobbies is making smaller beeswax candles for family and friends. I have blocks of beeswax from a local apiary and am well familiar with the properties of good beeswax (smell, color, consistency, etc). I was in need of some tapers and because I don't have any molds to make my own tapers, I purchased these in a pinch.First, the tapers are not what I would call a traditional circumference, and therefore will not fit into the base of a typical taper candle holder (I used a sheet of tin foil to make the candle sit firmly in the base).Second, the smell is somewhat offensive. The best way that I could describe the smell is a wet bale of hay. Not your typical sweet, honey smelling beeswax. I'm not sure where this beeswax is sourced, but something went wrong in the process of melting it and straining out the impurities. About the only good thing is that once lit, the smell becomes less noticeable.Third, the burn time. I purchased the 7-hour taper. After four hours, there was about 40% of the candle remaining. By my math, that equates to roughly seven hours if I were to burn the whole taper. The wick tended to get pretty long, so it became necessary for me to trim it once an hour to keep the flame smaller and prevent a quick burn time.For me, one of, if not the main reason I make and use beeswax candles is for the warm, sweet, honey aroma that they give off. These tapers just don't have that. The few small drips of wax that spilled onto the counter were difficult to remove (due to their stickiness), which would suggest that they do indeed contain natural beeswax. Whether they are 100% beeswax or not is anyone's guess, although the package says that they are.I'm on the fence as to whether or not I'll be returning these, but one thing is for sure; I'll be purchasing some taper molds in the very near future and making my own!
