Let me start by saying that heat mats are not designed for use with reptiles, they are the only source of heat. However, for cold winters or if you are trying to raise the temperature in the aquarium a bit, these heaters are fine with me. You can put them on a dimmer to control the temperature. I just bought a plain old Home Depot/Menards dimmer extension. I smack him on the outside of the tank and he can raise my tank to 70 or 80 degrees. Ideal for most tropical frogs and reptiles. I have several for growing tree frogs in cold weather.
