Good, not great. - Vise

I bought this vise last week and finally built a holder for it today. I haven't really used it yet, but I can share my first impressions. In general, I'm happy with it at the moment, but it has some drawbacks. Design: The first thing that struck me after unpacking is that the thing is heavy. It has a lot of gravity, which is good for a vise. That means there's a lot of metal in it, which means all the castings are thicker and it's probably stronger. Also, Yost advertises it as 60,000 psi cast iron, which is standard on mid-size vises, and is stronger than the 30,000 psi cast iron, which is standard on cheap vises. I have no way of verifying what these vises are actually made of, but since they are made in China I have my doubts. Fixation of the position when turning in both directions at the highest level. These vises stay in place when you lock base rotation and head rotation. The lead screw handle is set too close to the head, so my hands (not huge, but not small) got between the handle and the head, opening/closing the jaws. This is a very tall vise, about 11 inches from the bottom of the base to the top of the jaws. It's not the end of the world, but as a little guy, I'm uncomfortable using them. jaw open. 5 inches and there is a stop so you cannot open further beyond that. The dynamic sponge has a "collar" formed around the slider that protrudes beyond the sponge insert making clamping difficult. I plan on pushing the jaw insert even with or slightly beyond this collar, but it will take about 1/2 inch of this vise's opening capacity. Fit and Finish: The color isn't perfect, but it's good enough. for something that will see a lot of abuse in the store. In particular, the lines between the bare and painted areas are sloppy. The castings also look good, but there are small imperfections in the castings. It was all oily out of the box, meaning it has no surface rust, but handling and installation was a messy process. Note that there is no grease on the lead screw or guide. If you rely on oil lubrication, you rely on frequent lubrication - lubricate this vise. I will clean the oil and lubricate the important places. The cheek inserts do not match perfectly. They are flat, but one is offset to the right and the other to the left by about 1/8 inch. The cheek insert faces are cut into a grid pattern for grip, but this is a very flat pattern with flat tips to the "teeth" of the pattern, so I don't expect it to hold very securely. When tightened lightly with nothing in the vise, the handle will hang almost straight down. Note that if you mount it on top of the toolbox instead of dangling from the side like me (see pics), the handle will hang in front of the top drawer, interfering with you every time you open or close that drawer. All in all I am not sure I need a double rotary vise but if I needed others I would not hesitate to order these again. ****UPDATE**** I've been using this vise for 2 weeks now and love that the head spins. This turns out to be a lot more convenient than I ever expected. I'd really like to rotate it while it's clamped, although part of the reason it holds its position so well is because it uses the force of the clamp to lock in position. Also, I was right about my hand getting caught between the handle and the head. I'm going to modify the end of the lead screw to move the handle further away from the head, but that hasn't happened yet. If these vises get stolen tonight, I'll order new ones in the morning. UPDATE FOR 1 YEAR. I bought this vise a little over a year ago and it has now become my go-to vise for everything I do. I have another vise, an old animal vise from the 1940's, and it's rarely used because it's so much more comfortable. It showed signs of wear; The finish chipped more easily than other vises I've had and the anvil is softer than other vises I've had. But overall I'm glad I bought it and am considering buying a second one.
