Review on NIST Traceable Calibration Certificate for Starrett Stainless Steel by Louis Asok

Revainrating 2 out of 5

For real? Is this really the way of Starrett?

After using Starrett tools for 30 years, I've noticed that many of their products are now made outside of the United States. This 799A-6/150 caliper has a barcode that says "China". Ironically, I bought it to replace Centech's port freight. This Starrett caliper shares a nearly identical $15 Centech design and build quality. If I wanted another Chinese made caliper I would just buy it and save over $80. What I really need is something better. You'd think if you pay over a hundred bucks, you'd get this. Here's an overview of how much it's worth: Dial: Looks like Lexan or something, dark black, hard to read. LCD display: nothing special, I'm sure it's clear to read. Battery, supplied with a battery, not installed. Build Quality: Not bad and typical of other Chinese calipers, but the depth gauge (the rod that comes out at the bottom) is a bit wobbly. The sliding action of the caliper is a little tight (not smooth). In both of these aspects, Centechs is actually better on HF. Case: Cheap plastic, difficult to open, likely to break if dropped. For the price, the case should be much better. This case is important. For some reason the device I received was without a calibration certificate so I have to send it back.

Pros
  • Ergonomically designed for ease of use
Cons
  • Big and chunky
