Our 8 year old daughter loves bugs and rocks and is generally curious to see small objects up close. Initially, she needed a lab device to see germs, but we knew it would take a little work and parental involvement to use. It's really a completely different instrument from a microscope, and neither can do what the other does. This is probably more useful and enjoyable for children. Although this is a magnifying glass and not a microscope, it is perfect and very easy to use. She can take a bug, plant, rock or whatever and get as close as you want. And even take a picture. The only complaint is about the lighting. Adjustable brightness or different temperature would be nice. Sometimes it's too bright and white light. We usually stick a piece of white paper under the object so we can see better. I could imagine using it for different purposes. Micro soldering, splinter removal, coin validation.
