The cord is long enough to run a single strand down the center of a typical event table. The battery is small enough to be hidden and has a decent build. Battery discharge was not a problem for us. One of the bags was hastily removed and the switch turned on. When I received my backpack for another event a few weeks later, the lights were still dim. One note I want to make is that the lights are pretty bright. Too light to leave in the center of the table without covering with tissue paper or fabric. Perhaps they're the perfect brightness for an outdoor party on a porch rail or in a tree.
