The lid you take and twist to grind peppercorns fits snugly over the flattened portion of the drive spindle, locking it in place. The nut threads onto the threaded portion of the spindle that protrudes through the lid. The harder you tighten the nut, the higher it raises the spindle and the interior of the grinder at the bottom of the spindle, resulting in a finer grind.The nut, lid, and spindle move as a unit because the lid is tight on the flat of the spindle is fixed. The nut cannot loosen when turning the lid. The nut just sits there. If there was a better pepper mill gi bt, I'd like to hear about it.
