Review on AHJDL Rechargeable Reflective Dog Bark Collar - 5 Adjustable Sensitivity and Intensity Levels - ๐Ÿถ Dual Anti-Barking Modes - Rainproof - No Barking Control Shock Collar for Small Medium Large Dogs by Karina Rodriguez

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great collar for our German Shepherd

We have a semi-feral GSD puppy who is very talkative in his cage. Since we live in a townhouse and share walls with others, it's not entirely sustainable. This collar really calmed her barking. It has 5 sensitivity settings and can only be used with vibration. Battery life is excellent in my opinion, but if she doesn't turn off the collar after about 8 hours (overnight) it will turn itself off. It fits well and really reduces barking. Definitely recommend. (EDIT) After posting this review and reading some others I thought I needed to clarify a few things. I have been training dogs for over 30 years. I mainly use positive methods, but I understand that in some situations correction is needed (we shared a wall with neighbors) or cases where dogs need correction when you're not around (barking). This collar offers 5 levels of SENSITIVITY, no correction. Sensitivity means the threshold at which the collar will activate. If you set one up, you can whine/talk a little. Level 5 is the intolerance level, and yes, it picks up other sounds (e.g. my toddler makes a high-pitched scream right next to the dog's ear and I immediately pull the collar off). my dog, lesson learned, don't be lazy, undress him in the house!) Three seems like a good balance to us. You need to know your dog and your surroundings. If your dog barks during a correction, one of several things can happen: 1) The collar is set to vibrate only, no correction. While this may work for some very sensitive dogs or dogs that are already "collar trained", starting with a stubborn/working pedigree dog DOESN'T WORK. 2) The collar does not have good skin contact. There MUST be skin contact to feel either the vibration (which is strong enough to be even a slight correction) or the correction itself. If you have a plush breed with a long or thick coat, this can be a problem. You can slightly shave the square on the neck to ensure good contact in this case. Just big enough to accommodate contacts sufficiently. 3) location of contacts. You want a collar that is clean and placed just below the lower jaw. Not on the side of the neck, not on the back of the head, not in the middle of the neck. The sides and nape have thicker skin and are not as sensitive as the neck area, the fur is also denser and prevents good contact. If you have a dog that suffers from fleas or allergies, or is constantly scratching and moving the collar, this could be why it's not working. 4) The collar is off. When my dog didn't activate the collar at all in the morning at night (8+ hours), the collar would just turn itself off to save battery. If you leave it for a few days without checking (which I do NOT recommend) it might just shut down. Just press the button to turn it back on (or make sure the light on the collar is still on). 5) The sensor may be clogged/blocked. It is located next to the charging port. This happened to us after the small rubber seal/lid gnawed off. I simply put a small piece of tape over the charging area to make sure no hair, water or dirt got in and it wouldn't work. It turns out that I closed the sensor. Moved the band, it still protects the charging port but it worked again. NO PART OF EQUIPMENT IS FREE TO SERVICE. A few safety considerations/comments: Give your dog a break from time to time. If supervised, remove the collar and let them bark/growl/cry/communicate. Finding the balance between being tight enough/too tight is difficult for some dogs, both behaviorally (scratching/pulling and moving the collar) and physically (fur). These contacts CAN and WILL produce MANIFESTATIONS if left unchecked/removed for too long. Don't be lazy! Check the collar and neck area daily to ensure proper fit, tension and comfort. Correction collars of ANY KIND (remote or automatic) ARE NOT EVERYDAY COLLARS and are not intended to be left indefinitely or removed weekly for recharging. I hope this helped. I found this collar fair, humane and helpful. But only as a learning aid, not as a permanent solution. Nothing replaces proper training/behaviour management.
