Review on ๐Ÿ“ป Sangean DT-800BK Rechargeable Pocket Radio - AM/FM/NOAA Weather Alert (Black/Gray) by Nathan Akers

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not a bad radio for the price.

I love the Sangean products, which I first encountered when they were making the old Radio Shack shortwave receivers. This is a good pocket radio that is great for outdoor activities and indoor activities that involve moving from room to room a lot. This is slightly better than average in terms of indoor RF reception. The antenna is heavily oriented towards AM, so for best reception you should aim the radio in the direction of the signal. Fortunately, this is rarely a problem with a pocket radio. VHF reception is also very good. The FM sound in the headphones is very pleasant, with good channel separation. There's also a mono switch for monitoring the speakers. The volume control is stepped rather than continuous, so you're sometimes trying to get that perfect volume in between steps. Impossible. The speaker works well and sounds like a 2 inch or so speaker should. This is NOT a particularly loud speaker. So if you're in a fairly noisy environment, you might want to use earbuds or headphones. My first copy of this radio worked fine for about 10 minutes until I unplugged the headphone jack. This action appears to have shorted out the entire radio. After that he didn't work at all, except for hours. I was able to return it to the nearest Kohl store and a replacement arrived within a few days. This works fine after about a month. The display is clear and provides station callsign information, as well as frequency and music information when the station is broadcasting it. Alkaline battery life is very good. Batteries are also available. To use them, you need to install a switch in the battery compartment. The radio comes with a set of headphones, a pocket clip that clips on and off easily but is secure. There's also an FM antenna that plugs into the headphone jack. When the headphones are in use, they act as an FM antenna, so you are protected from FM radio anyway. There is also a switching power supply that can be used to operate the radio or charge batteries. All in all a good radio for the price.
