Review on πŸ’ͺ Enhanced Sony ICD-B5 Digital Voice Recorder: Maximizing Efficiency & Performance by Avery Sharma

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good for basic use, best for portable AV

I work for three magazines and use this recorder for professional work in demanding environments. Before buying the Sony ICD-B5 I did a lot of shopping and heard a lot of good things about this recorder (consumer reports etc.). Unfortunately, while the reviews were accurate in their positives, only people who just want the basics should consider purchasing this product. There are a few key things that Sony and other manufacturers of these recorders need to consider (I really haven't found the perfect solution for my needs to be honest). The Sony ICD-B5 falls short in the following areas: * There is no "slow motion" function that many microcassette recorders have. You have the choice between Play or Stop/Pause. that's all. *Because you don't have "slow motion" you have to keep pressing "pause" during playback (when taking notes), which wastes a lot of time and drains batteries. Very fast. An hour and a half to two hours of interviews including playback and the batteries are [gone].* The recorder has a jack that says 'Plug-In Power' but nobody, including Sony, sells the necessary power adapter.* If If you don't If you accidentally press the rewind button twice, you will return to the beginning of the recording. VERY BAD. Then you must quickly return to where you were. More time and batteries wasted. You should have a button that takes you back to the last point in the recording you listened to.* Slow forward and rewind - I was expecting something much better from digital. Unfortunately, these two functions work the same way as with the microcassette. Slow and boring. I gave this item 3 stars because other digital recorders I've seen honestly don't seem to be much better.

Pros
  • Rugged construction
Cons
  • Damaged
