I use this mortar and pestle every day to grind the spices in my kitchen - cumin, coriander, garlic, cumin etc. It arrived in perfect condition. Follow the included instructions when it arrives to clean the granite dust and then wash it off with water - NO SOAP. Added silicone lid/mat and small wooden spoon. I always end up using both. The mat helps keep it on the table (although not necessary) and doubles as a lid. Sppon helps pour the ground spices into the pot. This mortar is heavy enough to stay in place on the kitchen counter, but not so heavy that I'm afraid to move it. Due to the shape and weight of the pestle, all you really have to do is push down and twist in a circular motion to grind the spices into a powder. This is more effective than percussive movements. The mushroom shape at the top of the pestle makes it easier to hold. The bowl is deep enough so the spices won't spill out as you chop. As a side note, I've tried using the flat end of the mortar with the mushroom end of the pestle, but it's impractical, although a clever trick. The shallow bowl is too shallow and the pestle is too heavy, making it difficult to operate when flipped. But no waste as the deep bowl of the mortar with the heavy end of the pestle does everything I need it to do.
