Disappointing, but with potential

I owned the Nikon S9100 for about half a year and finally, when the disadvantages outweighed it, I sold it. Please note that most of the day I carry a small camera in my bag and take it everywhere to take an unexpected shot of nature or the street. This camera should be an upgrade for my Canon Elph SD1000 due to Nikon's much higher zoom and angle. Unfortunately, the S9100 disappointed in many but not all respects. I am by no means a professional or even an advanced amateur photographer. However, I feel like I'm able to get the most out of these small cameras, so my review is non-technical. Both pluses and minuses of the S9100 come with limitations. Here are some thoughts on the Nikon S9100: Firstly, I can't comment on the video function as I never use it. Lots of cool art features including selective color and panorama (albeit poorly implemented compared to SONY). Selective color works very well. Easy to use thanks to a fairly intuitive menu but without real manual controls. Powerful zoom, but you'll need a tripod for that extreme close-up. Nikon claims it's a low-light gem. No, that is not so. I took the S9100 to a small concert venue where there were some lighting issues and every image was washed out. Adjusting the ISO didn't help either. I pulled out my iPhone 4 and every shot was sharp and perfectly exposed. While the S9100 isn't technically a "pocket camera," it's small enough to fit in a holdall or cargo pocket. The wide viewing angle is one of the best in its class. cameras. I compared the same shot in Photoshop Elements with my Canon SD100, Nikon S9100 and Lumix DMZ-ZS8 that I bought to replace Nikon. In terms of clarity, the Lumix took first place with its excellent glass, followed by Canon. Nikon was noticeably softer. However, Nikon's color reproduction was significantly better. I really wanted to like this camera. Nikon has created a line of cameras with great potential. After carefully researching the S9100 and reading reviews here on Revain and elsewhere, I knew there would be compromises. As it turned out, with too many hands there were too many mediocre results that made continued use of this device unacceptable and made it impossible to capture the great shots that have made me so happy with my Canon (and now Lumix).

Pros
  • Like everything before
Cons
  • Useless functions
