Excellent discs. Having used a variety of WD Red, Green, and Seagate Archive drives for almost several years, I thought I could give you some helpful tips on what to look for when buying new drives and determining infant mortality. .The first thing you need to pay attention to is the packaging that the disk comes in. Consistent with industry practice, one or more drives will be shipped in boxes ideally suited for that drive. Inside the box, the drive should be hung on two plastic brackets. These brackets hang the drive and catch any drips from the package during shipping. (Bulk orders (15+) can be shipped in a large box with foam cut arrays). Second, make sure you have clean hands when installing discs. Wash them, or better yet, wear gloves. Try not to get oil on the discs from your fingers/hands to avoid hot spots. Thirdly, format the disks in full format after installation. You can run 1, 3, 5 (or even more) disk passes. This ensures that every single sector of the hard disks is written. After the formatting is complete, look for the SMART data and check the values for anything worrisome. If the drive was damaged in transit, it may be visible now. Compare the values with your other drives. Start times, head parks, etc. may vary slightly, so don't worry about a slight variance, but watch out for poor reads, reallocated sectors, and RUEs. Of course, all these tips should be taken with one soul. Salt, since SMART numbers aren't a silver bullet for predicting drive failures, but these tests should be a good indicator of whether a drive is ready for production use. Above all, remember that backups are your friends.
