As my previous dimmer broke I wasn't 100% sure which switch the lights were connected to. I couldn't turn on the light and flip the switches. I have invested in this non-contact voltage detector. I'm glad I did, safety first. I had a bit of a shock a few years ago. I turned on the light in my dining room and flipped switches until they went off. Only the upstairs ceiling light was on a different circuit marked as a garage! My advice, don't risk it, CHECK and make sure the power is actually off. This is an inexpensive device that can save your life. I wish the probe was longer, I tested it on an old turn-on dimmer that indicated turning off. I had to unscrew the old dimmer, pull it out a little to get the probe closer to the wires. This was not the case when testing the socket, just place the probe next to the hole and it will glow. Make sure you test both sensitivity levels. Red 70-1000 showed no voltage but blue 12-1000 did. did. The auto-off function is good for saving battery power.
