I really liked the storytelling and voice of this book. This is a great read aloud book, even for children who are "too big" for picture books. Satchel Page was a great player by any measure, perhaps one of the greatest. The way he responded to segregation - simply being the BEST - is a role model for all people. Overcoming obstacles (poverty, prison and discrimination) is a recurring theme in the book. As a parent, I'm not thrilled to read about how poorly Satchel Page fared after being accepted into the big leagues for not abiding by team rules (refusing to show up for team practice and being late for games) . using this moment as a teaching moment with my boys to explain solid civic values like work ethic, dependability, humility and teamwork. Great, great baseball book about a wonderful, talented, inspirational man.
