I don't often write reviews, but I want to help my geek friends save themselves the days of research and frustration I went through to finally get the best speed out of my gigabit internet. There are several gold nuggets here that you need to know about. When I first upgraded to the new gigabit here in Denver (from Xfinity) he was using their new cable modem/router (XB6-A) and I only got 500MB download. Speed. It also hung around our house when a few people were playing and other were downloading or even accessing intensive websites. (lag = ping grew). After upgrading to this Netgear CM1000, upgrading my cables, and resetting my router, I'm now getting the highest download throughput (941Mbps) and lowest ping I've ever seen! The connection is reliable throughout the house. SHORT ANSWER: Get this Netgear CM, upgrade your ethernet cables to Cat 6 (or Cat 5E for short distances), then factory reset your router to get the best speed. You may still need a new router to achieve gigabit speeds. I have the fastest download speed (941Mbps) and lowest ping I've ever seen! I ran many tests to compare this cable modem to Xfinity's XB6-A. Here are some key things I learned: 1) Make sure your ethernet cables from your cable modem to your router and from your router to your PC are CAT6 or at least CAT5E (for short distances). 2) Upgrade to this Netgear CM1000 cable. The modem REDUCES my ping/latency compared to the XB6-A that Xfinity provided. I just got 5 MS pings to the Google server here in Denver! UNHEARD. In most cases it's around 8-9 ms with this new cable modem. I got 11-14 with the Xfinity modem. If you are a gamer, low ping is important! 3) The Xfinity XB6-A modem/router combo does not work very well when connected to its own router. Xfinity recommends just using their device and unplugging the router.4) Approximately 941 Mbps is the maximum download speed that modern gigabit routers/switches can currently offer, so don't worry if you don't exceed that speed 5) Many routers can't handle gigabit download speeds, especially if you have features like QoS, traffic counters, keyword blocking, etc. enabled. My Netgear Nighthawk (R7000) only got 400-500Mbps (with speed test) because I have some of these features enabled. Even when I disabled these features, the speed was still slow. A factory reset fixed the problem and now I'm getting download speeds of 937 - 943 Mbps! The reason these routers slow down when you enable advanced features is because CTF (Forward over Forwarding) is disabled and the router stops using its faster processor. . Some of the newer routers can still support a maximum download speed of 941 Mbps and also allow QoS and other features. 6) There is an excellent Small Net Builder site that compares routers to see what download speeds of 941Mbps can achieve. I recommend you give it a try if you need a new router. Please note that this Netgear CM1000 is a cable modem ONLY. It's not a router. So if you only have one device to connect to, that's fine, but if you want to have more devices and wireless networks, you'll also need a router. Xfinity ships with the XB6-A as a cable modem. and WiFi router in one. I personally think it has some flaws that need addressing, but it seems like a capable piece of hardware. You can save $10 a month on rent by purchasing a NETGEAR CM1000. PS: I am planning to upgrade my router to still get 941Mbps download speed when QoS is enabled. With QoS, it allocates part of your bandwidth (e.g. 20%) to high-priority traffic, e.g. B. Games that require low latency, and then limits all other connections (e.g. large downloads) to the other 80% of the connection. Note that if you enable this and run a speed test, it will appear lower simply because it is now reserving some of your bandwidth for other devices/traffic in your home.
