I've been using Berkey filters for about 4 years now and have always found them great for filtering my water. One day I noticed that my Berkey filtered water and tap water tasted about the same, so I decided to get a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter and see for myself how effective these "filters" are. Here are my results for filters that are about a year old: - Berkey filtered water: 037 TDS - Unfiltered tap water: 037 TDS That got me scratching my head. Maybe my filters are completely defective? I mean TDS didn't go down by one, how is that possible? So I decided to take out the old filters, spend $128 and put new filters in. I primed them and ran the water through them 3 times. Here are my results: for the new filters: - Berkey filtered water: 043 TDS - Unfiltered tap water: 037 TDS So, as you can see, "filters" added something to my water. "But," you might say, "that's because they're new!" I thought so too, so I decided to use them for 4 more days. Here are the results: - Berke's filtered water: 043 TDS - Unfiltered tap water: 037 TDS "But they do something!", one might add. "Maybe your tap water is so good it can't be filtered any further." I thought about that too, so I spent another $50 to buy another water filtration system and run the water through it. Here are my results: - New filter system: 000 TDS (two meter readings) - Berkey filtered water: 043 TDS - Unfiltered tap water: 037 TDS So there are several things to take away from this: 1) Berkey is a scam and their filters do nothing. I hope it isn't, and I'd like to believe it isn't like the second option; 2) Berkey is only good for very dirty pond water but not effective for tap water, in which case it would be useless. for the majority of people.
