Prior to this camera I was primarily using point and shoot and was looking for a step up. This camera has pretty much everything I could have hoped for. With the only exception that 1080p HD videos are only good in some situations. When recording at 17 Mbit/s, there is not enough information to record many fast movements in great detail. So in these situations there is some blurring. Anyway, I've read rumors that in a future firmware update the speed will increase to 24 or 28 Mbit/s. So, in the future, this problem might disappear. It still captures great 720p videos in all situations. In terms of images, the camera is very intuitive in how to take good pictures with many presets, but it also gives you more and more control as your photographic knowledge grows. I highly recommend reading all manuals if you want to get the most out of this camera. And if you're new to the more advanced world of photography, again after spending some time experimenting with it. Working with some of my friends' DSLRs, this camera is indeed much lighter and smaller, but once you're used to point-and-shoot shooting, it definitely gets bulkier. If you also opt for the Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 aspheric pancake lens, this tiny but high-quality lens transforms the camera into something you can easily slip into a jacket or short cargo bag. Remember that a camera that just shoots out of the water shoots in terms of image and video quality. The pancake lens allows you to take better pictures and videos even in low light conditions, especially without a tripod. The kit lens only works at f/4 wide and f/5.3 telephoto. Likewise, the kit lens is very good and better suited for video (virtually silent AF (autofocus) and good optical zoom range), but weighs more than the camera body. Which should tell you something about how light the camera itself is given its capabilities. Together, the camera and complete lens weigh about 2 pounds. That's at least a third less than a DSLR and a similar wide-angle/telephoto combo. Both the DSLR and lens will not autofocus when shooting at 1080p or 720p like this camera and lens combo. I bought a 16 gigabyte Class 10 Scandisk card with the camera and I haven't had any buffering issues either when capturing or recording video. Anything slower than Class 10 and you'll likely run into issues if you want to record 1080p video with this camera. A few other quick mentions: when using the timer function) *TV playback capabilities for slideshows and videos are good (including a WVGA cable but no HDMI cable) *The manual says the battery lasts around 320 shots. I have a 480 and still use AFS. All in all I would recommend this camera and lens kit to anyone who wants a camera with great features in a small package.
