Review on Optimized Berkey Countertop Fluoride Filter Elements by Keith Norred

Not Allowed: Kitchen & Bath Faucets

This unit clogged after filtering less than 50 gallons of water. I disassembled it, cleaned it and backwashed 4 filter elements. It now processes almost no water, even with the top water tank filled to within 1 1/2 inches of the top of the black carbon filter elements. I also have a Zero Water carafe that didn't stop filtering until I filtered through the 1000 gallon or whatever their filter element is designed for. Same water, radically different results. After cleaning the Berkey vessels and elements and backwashing the filter elements, I refilled the holding tank using the Zero Water filter outlet to ensure the water entering the Berkey was free of contaminants. I then called Berkey customer service and was told to repeat the filter element cleaning and backwash and clean the black carbon elements with a Scotchbrite sponge. Berkey was purchased for emergencies where this is unacceptable.
