ATTENTION! I bought one of these to use in my kitchen with my municipal water system (what I measured was below average particle levels). The filters worked normally for 6 weeks, but were then quickly completely clogged and unusable. To fix this, the company recommends cleaning the outside perimeter of the filters or peeling the surface with a vegetable peeler, but that didn't work. After too long a response time, the company agreed to replace the filters under warranty, but the replacement…

Not Allowed: Kitchen & Bath Faucets

This unit clogged after filtering less than 50 gallons of water. I disassembled it, cleaned it and backwashed 4 filter elements. It now processes almost no water, even with the top water tank filled to within 1 1/2 inches of the top of the black carbon filter elements. I also have a Zero Water carafe that didn't stop filtering until I filtered through the 1000 gallon or whatever their filter element is designed for. Same water, radically different results. After cleaning the Berkey vessels and…

Big Berkey vs. Tap Water - Actual Lab Test Results

We've read many reviews but couldn't find a definitive review, so we decided to test our unfiltered tap water (in Southern California) and our new filtered water from Big Berkey here we are: Results: Our unfiltered tap water was generally accepted by the lab with the following notable exceptions: 1. Arsenic: 2.5 parts per billion (Billion) - the lab deemed this cause for "caution"2. Uranium-238: 3.1 ppb – also "cautious”3. Aluminum: 94 ppb - Caution4. Fluoride: 0.8 parts per million (ppm) - The

Love it! Refill filters when clogged and slow

I've been using Big Berkey for a year and a half now and I love it. It was more mule at first, but I've tried Brita/Pur/Clear2O/fridge filters and none of them impressed me. The filters were expensive and reportedly needed to be changed often, and the water didn't even taste that good. Since my water usage calculation indicated that this Berkey kit should last for years, I went with this. A few weeks later I bought a glass sight tube and it's a lot easier to see the water level in the tank than

A failed Berkey fluoride filter is poisoning the filtered water.

Ordered a Big Berkey filter after hearing from many sources that this is the gold standard for a water filter and of course has the cheapest parts. Upon unboxing the filter, I noticed that one of the black filters had chipped slightly, but probably not enough to affect functionality. I assembled the system EXACTLY as instructed and screwed in the fluoride filters EXACTLY 8 turns. The designers of these filters are just bad engineers as you can easily make 8 turns because the threads are not…

  • Includes stainless steel Big Berkey housing (top, bottom, cap, nozzle, etc.), 2 Black Berkey filters and 2 fluoride elements.
Cons
  • Could have gone for a newer model
