Review on Optimized Berkey Countertop Fluoride Filter Elements by Pedro Hague

A failed Berkey fluoride filter is poisoning the filtered water.

Ordered a Big Berkey filter after hearing from many sources that this is the gold standard for a water filter and of course has the cheapest parts. Upon unboxing the filter, I noticed that one of the black filters had chipped slightly, but probably not enough to affect functionality. I assembled the system EXACTLY as instructed and screwed in the fluoride filters EXACTLY 8 turns. The designers of these filters are just bad engineers as you can easily make 8 turns because the threads are not finished and because you also screw them to the bottom of the black filters which are fixed with a plastic nut. That's too small for fluoride filters to make a good connection at 8 or maybe even 9 or 10 turns. These filters were defective and their sandy medium seeped into the bottom of the filter. What you probably don't want people to know is that this "sand" that is the filter medium of a fluoride filter is actually aluminum oxide; Aluminum is an excitotoxin. It accumulates mainly in the brain, clogging the blood-brain barrier and preventing synaptic uptake of dopamine and other important neurotransmitters. Aluminum is also quite difficult to wash out of the body. So instead of getting purified water from this water filter I was poisoning myself, I noticed after about a week of drinking water that my throat was sore and my kidneys were hurting. I was foolish to think that this problem could be solved by going to the dealer and buying some replacement fluorine filters. After pouring and installing these filters in just 7 ROUNDS, toxic aluminum oxide was still building up at the bottom of the filter. I am requesting a full refund and am seriously considering taking further action as the alumina spillage into the water I drank has caused some discomfort. I would NOT recommend ANYONE to buy this product as its quality control is terrible and even if it weren't, you're probably still drinking some aluminum after the water has gone through a fluoride filter.

Pros
  • Includes stainless steel Big Berkey housing (top, bottom, cap, nozzle, etc.), 2 Black Berkey filters and 2 fluoride elements.
Cons
  • Could have gone for a newer model
