My new rescued dog ran out of the house several times as company came and went. I decided to put a gate at the top of the stairs so Arthur wouldn't run off and chase the neighbor's cats. My concern was finding a gate that was wide enough to climb in and strong enough that people couldn't move it since it was attached to the wrought iron. The hole was 48 to 49 inches. To make it more durable I bought a piece of wood and cut it to the width and length of the end posts. I sprayed the wood and taped it to the wrought iron posts with black tape to hold it in place until it dries. At this point I was able to screw the round plates into the wood to keep them from slipping like I feared if they were attached directly to the wrought iron. The gate closes automatically, which is very convenient. It's a bit of a tricky opening as you have to slide and then lift, so I give directions so people don't break through. I am very happy with the end product.
