When plugged in it is basically a serial device (COM port in Windows) that transmits NMEA data. a plastic bag labeled with an email address for drivers etc. Email them and they will respond within a day. There are drivers and a control program (u-center) with amazing complexity. It's not very intuitive. Out of the box, it did an excellent job with GPS fixes. GLONASS does not seem to pull. I couldn't figure out how to get him to do it. At the apartment he was struggling to find a solution when connected to my laptop on my desk. I had to grab a USB extension cable and place the unit near a window to get a stable solution. Depending on your needs, it might be better to use a GPS with an integrated cable. The real question is what the use of NMEA data is. Not much in itself, at least not for Windows. Download and install gpscomplete (free trial, paid license) and it will read serial NMEA data and pass "sensor" data to Windows to view Windows Maps etc. However, don't expect to be able to do both at the same time without additional work/software/configuration. Impressive little device. . Works as advertised. Good value for money. But if you don't know what you're doing, unfamiliar with drivers, serial port configuration, etc., you might not get what you want.
