I just saved 4 pairs of black jeans with RIT and varnish fixer. I've used Rit paint several times and I'm always happy with the result. My jeans were about 4 years old and 3 of them had faded evenly after multiple washes while the 3rd pair hadn't faded as much, but for some reason one knee had faded stranger than the rest of the pants. Except for the color, all 4 jeans were in good condition and hardly worn. After painting, they all look like new. The only caveat I would like to draw people's attention to is that this is not a 15 minute process. It took me about 3 hours 1.) coloring process 2.) rinsing process 3.) color fixing process 4.) another rinsing process5. ) And finally, a quick wash to remove excess dye that hasn't settled on the fabric. I did it outside using the pot method. It was actually a galvanized steel tub big enough to paint all at once. You must fill the container with water that is at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit. I used a combination of tap water (about 120 degrees Fahrenheit) and water I've boiled on the stove to bring the water temperature to the desired level. You'll also need to add a cup of table salt to hot water and a tablespoon of liquid dish soap before adding the color. I'm not a dye chemist but my guess is that soap is used as a surfactant to help transfer the dye into the fabric. and the salt (sodium chloride NaCl) should help chemically bind the dye to the tissue since NaCl is a very reactive chemical. So just you know, to get it right, I'm gonna kill most of Saturday afternoon. But it's a bit fun and your clothes will look like new. Full disclosure, I only did this with blue or black jeans so the colors are dark. I've never tried cotton shirts or t-shirts and bright colors so I don't know how it would work.
