Everything works as you think, but the sucked water does not go through the filter material, but out and into the aquarium, the problem is that you then suck all the shit out from below and through the exit throw in the tank. It comes with a filter sock but it is tiny compared to the size of the tank this filter is designed for so you have to change that sock every 2 minutes which defeats the whole purpose. It either has to have a giant sock before the water gets into the filter (love that idea) or let the water run through the filter media before it gets into the tank.
