Review on Pony Jorgensen 1716 Bench Hold Down: Secure Your Workbench with Ease by Jeff Callier

Wrong clamp for me

I recently purchased this clamp along with its 4 1/2" counterpart (4 1/2" SLIDING GRILLE CLAMP - JORGENSEN #1708) for use in my new workbench. This clamp is totally unsuitable for me and I have no intention of using it. Giving one star would be unfair as the clamp works as advertised. It has a beautiful powder coat finish and is easy to install and remove with just one firm tap of a rubber mallet in the desired direction. My biggest gripe with this clamp is that the upright post is hexagonal in cross-section and the corners of the hexagon cut into the sides of my 3/4" bench holes, damaging them significantly. It goes without saying that my countertop is made from three pieces of plain old 3/4" thick AC plywood laminated on top together with a 3/16" thick piece of masonite to form the countertop. Obviously, plywood is pretty soft. hexagonal cross-section of the post as my bank. For me, the damage caused by using this mount in my bank's dog pits renders it useless. Your mileage may vary. The 4 1/2 inch clamp version of this is a different story. It has an upright, round-section post, seems to require less force to install properly (which I don't think is surprising) and won't damage the dog's bench holes. It installs and detaches quickly and securely, and works great on wood with up to about 2 inches thick (I wouldn't recommend it for wood thicker than 2 inches).
