This filter requires a sufficiently high water level in the pool. I would say the water level should be at least 1.5 inches from the top of your tank. The inlet has a small seam at the very top of the inlet tube which MUST be fully submerged in water or the pump will run dry. So if you're doing water changes or just keeping the water level down in your tank, this pump isn't for you. It is absolutely unsuitable for a turtle tank or the like. Also, the first one I ordered was defective. After I got everything set up I plugged it in, it started pumping but it made a very loud rattle/grind. Disassembled, impeller removed and reinstalled. After that it seems ok. Let it work all day, but I think it broke again overnight. I woke up to the smell of a burned engine. It's completely dried up and burned out. The impeller housing actually melted. I sent it back and decided to try again. The second started well and runs like a world champion. In general, for such a price, the filter is normal. Its main disadvantage is the need to maintain a high water level in the aquarium for it to function properly.
