Review on Sunex 480 Standard Impact Socket by Tremain Lapan

Buyer Warning. This socket will not properly fit 2 1/2 " NPT cast hex nuts

Before purchasing this socket, I used a digital caliper (with cracks) and a cast nut. 2 1/2 ". So I ordered this coupler because I thought it would be a perfect match for the cast hex nut that is used to attach traffic lights to NPT (National Pipe Thread) pipes. This coupler will not fit. The coupler actually has a taper inwards and rounded corners that should match the nut but as you can see from the photos this doesn't happen. Now all this socket does is barely grab points on the nut but the taper allows it over the top of the nut. It is assumed that the sleeve is 100% tight on the nut, which prevents rounding of the corners. As the pictures show, this is NOT the Case. These types of nuts are standard sizes, not metric (so they fit NPT fittings) so I can safely tell you that this is the manufacturer's fault for choosing a poor design. Please note that these sockets are special and are NOT found in large box home centers. The biggest I found was 2 inches in those spots and obviously it won't work. Folks if you need an outlet of this size DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SUPPLIER, seek another source if possible.

Pros
  • Specialty socket
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
