Easy switch from plastic

A couple of years ago, I started declining the offered plastic pouch with toothbrush and sample toothpaste/floss they pawn off on you at every six-month visit. Having almost depleted my prior stock, I wanted to switch over to something that would contribute less plastic to the landfill but was wary of purchasing a fully compostable product made with pig's hair bristles since picking a product seemed to require a lot more research. These brushes have turned out to be a good pick. There are some things to get used to as noted in other reviews, but they weren't show-stoppers for me. I purposefully did not tell my dental hygienist that I switched to these because I wanted to see if she noted more plaque buildup. After getting a glowing report, I told her I'd been using these, and she said she would have thought I was using an electric toothbrush. So, I'd say they clean well. I may move to a fully-compostable brush or one whose bristles are made with bio-based materials that use less petroleum, but for now, these are a step in the right direction.ProsBristles are relatively soft (not torn up gums) but still clean wellI had no problems with the bristles falling out during useBristles were easy to pull out with a pair of kitchen pliers before compostingLasted longer (4-5 months) than the recommended length of time (3 months)Less plastic wasteConsHandle grip is a bit awkwardCost is more compared to plastic (especially if you are just using freebies as I was)Toothbrush must dry out completely between uses or mold will form (I soak mine periodically in a peppermint essential oil solution just in case)Slight wood taste initially (I either got used to it or it dissipated)

Pros
  • The brushes are safe for people with allergies to plastic
Cons
  • Natural materials may wear down more quickly than synthetic materials
