decline in quality.

Starrett is known for being "Made in America" with high standards of precision. They lowered the cost and started manufacturing them abroad. It was a replacement due to losing one I bought a few years ago. Very disappointed with what is currently being produced. The clip on the back is terrible. It's now cut on an angle at the bottom so if it bends when attached to something it will tend to fall off of what it was attached to. The real killer now is the curvature of the measuring blade. It's such a tight radius and deep curve that when measuring there is room for barley to allow the clamp to snap into place at the end of the board. Either the curve has to be loosened or the end clamp has to be doubled in height. It's constantly peeling off the edge of whatever you're trying to catch it to measure. Third, the blade lock isn't as secure as it used to be. The band still slides in or out with a slight push/pull. Finally, it's obvious that the spring is the same as in their larger units, being redundant for the 16-foot size. This is an accident waiting in the wings at the speed and power it has. I will also say that this deviation is 1/8 inch on the Lixer calibration tester. Not much for the average person, but if you're using calibrated saw blades, that's a big deal. No certainty that a replacement would be better. Look elsewhere for band!
