Review on Guidecraft Jr. Rainbow Blocks: 40 Piece Set - Kids Learning & Educational Toys, Stacking Blocks by Kristen Jeanguenat

Surprisingly Small! Incomplete description leads to confusion!

I got these to give as a gift and was very surprised at how tiny they are! From Guidecraft's website I learned that blocks designated "Jr." are one third smaller than a standard unit block. Best Buy also carries regular sized Guidecraft Rainbow blocks although the block size is not specified in any of the sets. It appears that the other speciality blocks that Guidecraft makes, mirror, sand, water are also standard unit block sizes. As I want the rainbow blocks to work easily with other block sets they must be returned and the larger ones ordered. Best Buy should include the standard unit information in all the block descriptions and it would be nice if the actual sizes of the blocks were also included. Standard units in blocks are very useful as they are proportional in size. For instance, two squares will equal a rectangle, two quarter circles will equal a half circle, etc. Blocks in standard sizes expose young children to fractions and math through the trial and error of play way before they are ready for formal learning and can also be used when they begin school for explaining and illustrating these concepts.

Pros
  • Great!
Cons
  • The blocks are not stimulating enough for sensory development
