Review on Klein Tools 53731: Optimized Adjustable Hole by Joseph Scalea

Great concept but not in practice

I read many reviews of this drill before deciding to buy it. The price is right for something, I can choose the hole size I wanted. From all the feedback, here's what I did to get it right, in addition to reading the instructions in the box: - Make sure both blades are equidistant from center and the screw is seated snugly in the slots - Pull tighten the blade nuts - drill slowly - apply pressure . I can't say it didn't work. I just couldn't finish the first hole because the center drill kept falling off. There is a flat side at the end of the drill for screwing in and fixing the nut, but the nut itself is not tightened by the included hex wrench. The same allen wrench works great with blades that actually cut a circle. Since the center drill wasn't securely fastened, I had no choice but to send it back. The drill seems secure, but as soon as the drill spins, the drill falls out. Another thing I noticed is that the blades aren't perfectly aligned on either side. I spent a lot of time checking the distance from the center. There are markings on the stem holding it, but you really have to rely on the grooves for it to be accurate. If one blade is closer to center than the others, you won't make that hole at all. Finally, the first hole is drilled on a board of compressed wood (sawdust), so it's not difficult. really complete when drilling the pilot hole was pretty damn fast. I'm at a loss.<sigh>. So now I have to run in HD to buy a proper cutter to complete the job. This works when the central crown design is better anchored. I can't comment on whether the blade design requires more thought. Might be worth adding a second pair instead of just 2 and a reliable way to check settings for the less experienced DIYer.
