I made my own mantel/insert with Broan apron in stainless steel. Well, things are pretty brittle (but that felt good to me as they were easier to bend), so I also bought a ceramic sheet to add rigidity and used that cement to glue them together. Well it wasn't easy! The cement is very thick and would probably work on stainless steel, but it would dry out immediately if touched on fiberboard (even after spraying the board with water). To mitigate this I used two buckets: in one I mixed some cement with some water, and in the other I mixed a fairly runny mixture. I smeared a harder coat onto the stainless steel and a thinner coat onto the board (kind of oil it) by spraying a thin mist of water onto the cement already applied to the stainless steel. (Hard stuff, I worked my arms and legs at the same time :) After putting them together I put in some of the tiles I had and after 24 hours they were rock solid! The fiberboard is now blocking heat and the chimney is generating a lot of heat (well, a collector project is in the works right now to maximize efficiency). We have been using the fireplace for a month now, everything is fine.
