I needed a new pair of headphones and the LG Tone Free FP8 looked so good. Dislikes: Active noise cancellation, UV disinfection, wireless charging, USB-C and more! But the performance is not perfect. The LG Tone Free FP8 earbuds come in a retail box with instructions, a pair of small and large ear gels (middle ones installed), a USB-C charging cable and two earbuds. It's a very small package and the entire charging case fits in the palm of my hand. Headphones are good, compact, look solid. I connected them via USB-C and within half an hour they were fully charged and ready to go. They can also be charged wirelessly with most wireless chargers. The LG Tone Free FP8 headphones connect to my iPhone with no problems. After opening the case, everything was ready to pair the phone with the phone - reinserted, they have undergone UV disinfection and charged. Mating was quick and they were ready to go. As each earbud is inserted into your ear, you will hear a faint tone to let you know when it is activated. You can also use either the left or right capsule independently. You can control your music or calls with the standard tap mechanic, and there's nice feedback every time your touch is registered. LG also has an LG TONE Free app that lets you remap touch controls, update firmware, set equalizer settings, set low-latency gaming mode, adjust ANC, and more. It's a pretty decent little app. At the time of writing this review, I had firmware 1.09.1. The sound, on the other hand, is a big problem. With the ANC off, everything is very shallow and deep. Low volume is too quiet and high volume sounds even flatter. Enabling ANC helps fix this. I also found that only the Bass Boost or 3D Sound Stage EQ settings provided decent headphone sound. Nevertheless, the sound only becomes rich and clear at around 80% volume, since the lower volume is very low. At this high volume, you only have a small range of tone controls, but they get loud. Calls, on the other hand, were clear and good even at 50% volume. But even with ANC engaged, they don't cancel out a lot of ambient noise. These can be great little headphones. I like the design, size, weight and features. On paper these pods should be great. Unfortunately, LG's performance was poor. Chances are much of this can be fixed in firmware updates. I keep checking back even though none have been published yet. If they release an update and fix the sound, these will be my daily pods. I love the fit and feel, the feedback from the taps and more. But they need to fix the sound and ANC before they can replace my current headphones.
