Review on πŸ”§ Rectorseal Pipe Repair Kit 82112 by Lawrence Reuter

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Worked when all else failed

Proven rubber patch with radiator hose clamps; tried a U-shaped yoke with liners; tries to solder. They all slowed the leak but didn't stop it. I installed a baseboard hot water radiator from, say, a less than considerate contractor who was never heard from again. and one of the tubes was never soldered to its terminal, resulting in rapid dripping when heated. It was the middle of winter, so I didn't really want to turn off the heating to drain the water from the system and solder properly. Big mistake; the patch of rubber hose mentioned only slowed it down, and by summer the inner surfaces of the copper joint had rusted, making a good solder joint impossible. I think if I were a plumber I would have access to a strong acid that could completely remove the corrosion inside the joint, but the blowtorch and flux couldn't get where it was needed and I don't have the skill to disassemble them and solder the whole thing. The LeakMate U-clamp/liner might have worked if I hadn't already tried unsuccessfully to solder the tube, but now the solder stuck to the copper and didn't make the profile perfectly round, which seems to be a requirement for LeakMate (the Die shape of the yoke must match the profile of the pipe exactly) which in turn slowed the leak but didn't stop it completely. Rectorseal sealed the leak completely, both in static mode and with the heat and circulation pump running. You'll need to sand the surface of the whistle (with coarse sandpaper) and you should have everything ready - including gloves, a bowl of water by your side, lots of paper towels - because once you start, you're committed and you have to work. quickly, from time to time, splash water on the gloves and joint, rewind the tape four times and well, gradually pulling on it after each turn. It's supposed to cure in 30 minutes but I gave it a few hours to be safe before resealing the line but not a drop since. The reason for the four stars instead of five is that the last 20cm of the tape spool had already dried and hardened and had to be cut off and thrown away. Luckily the rest was more than enough for my situation.
