Making Ice Cubes

I've been making ice for over 40 years, from the days when you had to defrost your freezer yourself and used metal ice cube trays with levers, to today's self-defrosting freezers and plastic or silicone ones that are more disgusting. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that people without common sense can take the simplest and make it complex. "Winter is coming," but the ice is melting. If your freezer is defrosting on its own and you leave the ice cube tray UNCOVERED, the defrost cycle will thaw the ice cubes in the tray in about a day, making them easy to remove. This works with ANY pallet material: metal, plastic or silicone. However, this does not work so well with deep pans. To take advantage of the thaw cycle, I use a rack that allows air to circulate through all three pans. not just the top stacker. I have been using this technique for many years.2. My first foray into silicone trays was a tray for making 6 extra large ice cubes. It was an impulse buy from a discount store. It takes a long time for the self defrosting cycle to work on this tray, more than a week, during which time most of the cube has also disappeared. I use a different technique to easily remove ice cubes from this bowl. I put it on the table for a few minutes. The ice on the sides of the cube will start to melt and the cubes will be easy to remove. So what about the Ictrea tablets and Vremi tablets that I recently bought from Revain and need to review here.3. Ictrea - the cubes are smaller than I thought, but they will come in handy for freezing herbs and spices. They freeze quickly, so if you need ice cubes quickly, this is a good choice. Moving these trays from the sink to the freezer is easy as these trays have a rigid plastic frame and are easy to move without spilling. With the ice cube trays from Ictrea I use my rack and work as usual. When the cubes are done, I empty them into the ice basket, refill the bowls, and repeat. Once the ice bucket is full and the next set of trays is ready to be unloaded, I close the trays with the lids provided to stop the auto defrost cycle.4. With large Vremi ice cream bowls. These mouthguards are made entirely of silicone and are very flexible. I fill the trays in the sink and then place them on the lids so I have a solid base to carry them around. In the freezer, I pull them out from under the lid onto the shelf. I don't spill a drop with this method. For removing ice cubes I use the "put them on the counter for a few minutes and let the sides start to melt" method since they are too deep to thaw. loop works fine. When they weaken, I throw them in the ice basket. Again, when the container is full, I cover the bowls with the lids provided to protect the cubes from the thaw cycle. Not only will I be using these two bowls for ice cubes, but for portion control, leftover freezing, and canning. herbs, spices, sauces, sauces and the like. Ice is a cunning, vicious and relentless enemy, but to defeat him you just have to be patient and he will melt in your hands.
