Review on πŸ’» Silver Aluminum Hub Connector: Amazon Basics USB 3.1 Type-C to 4-Port by Matthew Ciula

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Feels solid and does the job

I bought a new laptop that only had two USB 3.0 ports. Since I usually use a wireless mouse and cooling pad, I didn't have room to connect other devices if needed. A hub would solve this problem, although some devices don't work as well when sent through a hub. Then, damn it, I realized that there are two USB-C outputs on the other side of the computer and I started looking for something that would allow me to convert one USB-C into multiple USB 3.0 -Transform exits and here we are. The styling is nice - better than "basic black" (seriously, why are ALL electronics black?). The size is good. It seems sturdy enough that it wouldn't get hit too hard when sitting on a stationary table, although it might move if you wiggle the cord. There are a couple of very small non-slip rubber strips on the bottom that do little to keep it in place. The sockets feel solid - when something is plugged in it seems to be tight (and to prove it, it fell off the computer desk at one point and it took me about a day to realize: it was still plugged in even though it was dangling cables from connected devices). I would not recommend it for use as a "road warrior". It's certainly small enough to fit in a pocket, but the bottom edges and corners are pretty sharp and I'd be concerned that the corners wouldn't damage the pocket (or your fingers if you're digging around). It's actually the only thing that made me rate it 4 stars versus 5. For my use, the fact that it comes with a Velcro anchoring strip solves all the problems with its kicks. I work with a laptop on a movable desk, and with the desk moving and various cables banging around nearby, it regularly fell off when I first got it. This was expected; I didn't want to attach it until I had a feel for where to put it so it wasn't in the way. the bottom of the hub and it was effectively immobilized. Maybe too much LOL because when I tried to move it a few minutes ago I had to work hard to get it out (the sharp edges didn't help). I would be suspicious of using swaths. if you were using a nicer desktop that you fear damaging: I have no idea how well this strip removes without damaging the surface. Someone really needs to come up with a hub that's either weighted (and has proper non-slip grips) or has suction cups to attach it to. Power Delivery: I know many devices (like external drives) don't work well with USB. concentrators. Haven't tried an external drive, but I regularly plug in my headset and phone to charge from a hub and they work fine. When I added a laptop fan to the mix, my phone displayed an "incomplete connection" message. As far as I can tell the phone was still charging, just slower. This was probably due to a loss of power from the cooling fan. Conclusion: Good: Compact. Is working. Anchor strips are easy to keep in place. Bad: sharp edges and corners. Non-slip strips are useless.
